The Maryville College Works program requires students to complete at least one (1) Significant Practical Experience between their Sophomore and Senior year that directly relates to your major and career goals. A valuable practical experience can come in many different forms. Below are examples of ways that students gain impressive professional and practical experience that they can include on resumes and graduate school applications.
"This summer I worked in the Classification Division at New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and with the Community One program! There I learned about reducing recidivism and how to interact with the diverse populations in detention centers. It was truly eye-opening and confirmed my desire to work at the federal level in law enforcement or doing investigative work. Thankfully, my internship helped me discover avenues that I can pursue to achieve these goals, and I made some great contacts!"

"Because of my internship at CDF Freedom School, I am now confident that I want to be working with children, those especially at-risk in the inner cities! Truly, I found my love working as a Servant Leader Intern, and the Career Center was with me through every step of the process. They even provided a space for Freedom Schools staff to interview me on campus!"

"This summer, I scored a competitive internship at the Breakthrough Collaborative in Santa Fe, NM, where housing is provided, and interns are thrown right in the action! I taught three 8th grade writing classes a day and even created a new elective - World Mythology! While there, I discovered that I really do love teaching! Thanks to the Career Center staff, who helped me through each phase of the 3-step interview process!"
